'Grounded in Tradition- With Freedom to Soar'
"Kolel" is a Hebrew word whose meanings include "inclusive", "embracing", and "community." Kolel is a place where adults gather to engage in serious and joyful Jewish text study which bonds people together, builds community and fosters spiritual growth. We believe not only in giving information but in effecting transformation. Thus Kolel's programs and courses are designed for any Jew who wishes to strengthen and deepen their Judaic knowledge; or individuals who wish to reconnect with their Jewish heritage, or those of other backgrounds exploring what Judaism may mean to them in the future.
Since its inception in 1991, Kolel has established its reputation as a dynamic, pluralistic, egalitarian institution where men and women can engage in Jewish learning which values both traditional and liberal interpretations. We see ourselves as a gateway into a richer expression of Judaism for each individual, wherever their journey of Jewish discovery may take them.
Kolel's Mission Statement
Kolel explores the world of Jewish learning through Jewish texts and thought and connects the many faces of Judaism in a liberal, pluralistic environment by:
- Promoting a transformative learning atmosphere where students and teachers acquire knowledge that helps them explore a more meaningful Jewish life;
- Creating a community that invites members to experience, learn and understand traditional Jewish thought and practices and apply them in our modern world;
- Providing an accessible environment where members of the community can better understand and practice their Judaism
